Unusual & Interesting Photos

Part 1:

1. I think the photos are interesting because its an original idea. The photos look like a fantasy, and take on a whole new shape.

2. He made these photos by using multiple exposure. He could have possibly moved his camera side to side during the long exposure of the photo being taken.

3. I think a building downtown like the frost bank would be good. Its local, easy to get to, and known by most people at Bowie, so it would be recognizable.

Academics & Community Service

My favorite photo is "Drop The Bass". In the photo it shows a girl dropping pinky red paint into a shallow dip. The photo catches the paint in action with splattered paints drops still in the air.

1. I picked this photo because the motion of dropping the paint happens so fast, you wouldn't see it as being interesting in reality. But, the photo freezes the moment so you have time to see what a common task looks like.

2. This has simplicity in which the background is just the blurred student, allowing you to focus on the paint.

1. You could take similar photos in classrooms during group experiments or projects. Also during a presentation from a student or a teacher.

2. I would want to go into a science teachers classroom because their classrooms are a slight bit different than the other teachers.

3. To get amazing photos, I will have to apply the rules of photography and capture an interesting moment, possibly in motion or action.

Academic Shoot Preview Assignment

THE STORY : I think this shows a story the best because these kids are feeding the homeless. I infer that that this is on a weekend during their free time, which shows a true act of kindness. They are outside in the cold helping people, while they could have been doing things for themselves.

ACTION AND EMOTION: The picture to the right shows the most emotion because the faces of the children. On one student you can see the joy on their face from the experiment, and on the other student, you can see the surprise mixed with happiness. It also shows action because the water in the air indicates a burst or explosion.
FILL THE FRAME: I think this fills the frame well because the students and dusty substance fill most of the photo. The only unoccupied space is by the head of the first student, but the blackness of the mask are blending into the background, so it is still occupying the space.

Least unethical

I think this is the least unethical because they didn't hurt the woman, they made her look better. If it were me, I would want them to fix my teeth. It also doesn't affect anyone except the women.

Most unethical

I think this is the most unethical because they did not really debate so this provides a false story. This makes people have false ideas and assumptions towards both men.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. This story is about photos being photoshopped and toyed with. This is a popular problem in the Middle East and also on April 1. In one case two female ministers were taken out of the photo so there were only men. Changing these photos has resulted with people getting fired from newspapers. Some photographers change their photos to show more success, however the photos aren't real.

B. I think this is unethical because the photos are a lie showing a false event. It also can hurt people involved in the photograph.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. The biggest challenge was trying to find a photo for "happy". We wanted a natural reaction and not a posed smile. Also, we thought "red" was one of the words and took useless red photos.

2. I was mostly thinking about cool angles to shoot with from either below of above.

3. I would probably incorporate more lines and simplicity. I feel like many of the pictures I took had busy backgrounds.

4. I would continue to shoot from different angles.

6. I would want to re-shoot the same prompts so I can take the same photos, but use a new rule of photography when I take it, and compare how much better the photo looks.

1. Two positive things is that they chose good angles to shoot at, and they had obvious center points in most photos.

2. One thing they could improve in is simplifying the backgrounds.

Avoiding Mergers

This doesn't follow the avoiding mergers rule in the bottom right corner. The cement block appears to come out of the firefighters head. It also cuts both the firefighters feet off.

Balance

In the photo the bridge balances out the twin towers. They have similar shapes of rectangles, and are on opposite sides of the photo. There is also blue sky peaking out between the bridge structure and also sky between the two twin towers.

Framing

9/11 picture: rescue workers pulling out a rescue worker at ground zero

In the photo the firefighters act as the frame. They are circled around the injured man, which is our center point. Because the firefighters have similar gear, our eyes shift to the man with different clothes, and he is very easy to locate because he is in the middle.

Simplicity

This shows simplicity with a plain blue background. We can focus on the building without any distractions. The building is obviously the center point because there isn't anything else to look at. The photographer chose a good height so that no other tall buildings would be in the back.

Lines

most newspaper editors

This has multiple lines with different colors. We can follow the lines down with the falling man. The man himself is on a line, this line lets us infer his path while he continues falling, which we follow down the picture.

Rule Of Thirds

As smoke billows from the north tower, the second hijacked plane bears down on the south tower

This shows rule of thirds with multiple objects. The top of the towers are on the first horizontal line, while also having the hit tower in the far right vertical line. The plane and tops of the other buildings are also follow the bottom horizontal line.

National Geographic

  By Don Chamblee

This is my favorite photo because theres so much to look at. Theres a wide array of color which is very eye popping. Also, you are able to look at two places at one time. You wouldn't be able to see from this perspective in reality, you would only be able to see inside the bus. This allows you to see outside as well. It shows the calm bus ride while also showing the fast moving motion outside represented in the blur. I like how the photo is perfectly split evenly in two sections.

I would take a photo of something that is not commonly seen. I would go to an unoccupied area and expose it. Maybe I would take pictures up close to wild animals, or maybe on a plane looking at the sky using an interesting angle. Also maybe underwater where people don't explore as much.

Touching People

1. I like this project because it disguises an awkward moment and passes it off as a cute normal photo. You might not have been able to guess that they were complete strangers based on how they are posed together. In some photos it also takes completely opposite looking people that you would never think of being together.

2. I would participate as long as I felt comfortable with the people and they didn't push the limits on the poses.

3. I think it would be fun to shoot the same concept using students from Bowie who are not friends already. They could also be from different grade levels. You could ask them to do intimate poses like in the project.

4. I enjoy the photos because they are amusing to look at when you know they are really strangers.

Top 40 Photos part 3

1. I chose this photo because the irony in it.

2. When I look at the photo my eyes go to the flower because it's placed in the middle of the photo. The photo revolves around the flower.

3. I think this photo made the top 40 because it's protesting in a peaceful new way.

Top 40 Photos part 2

1. I picked this photo because you can feel the emotion and respect in the photo just by looking at it.

2. This photo pops because it's only focused on the man and the background is blurred. This causes you to look directly at the man without distractions.

3. I think this made the top 40 because it shows the effect from a huge event in our society.

Top 40 Photos part 1

By Savannah cox

1. I choose this photo because the man was willing to lose his high ranking job to support what he believed in even if it meant going against his colleagues.

2. It used rule of thirds while showing the emotion on the man's face.

3. I think this made the top 40 because it motivates people to stand up for what they believe in.

Warm Up 9/15

1. I think this idea is cool because it makes you look at things from a new perspective.

2. Yes, because I was caught off guard at how it was upside down.

3. I can try something unique like this next time we go out shooting.

Great Black and White Photos Part 2

John Gutmann was born in Breslau, Germany in 1905. He attended Johannes Gymnasium in Germany, then studied art history and philosophy at Schlesische Freidrich Wilhelms University also in Germany. He finally left Germany to photograph in 1933, signing a contract with Berlin as a photojournalist. Throughout the years, he has taught at universities, state colleges, and traveled across the world. He also founded an international film program and directed programs as well. He has published multiple documentaries, books, and catalogs in his lifetime, including: Le Palais Ideal, GUTMANN, and The Restless Decade. He produced plenty of exhibitions showing his artwork, his last exhibition honored his career and contributions to San Francisco State University. He ended up passing away June 28, 1998 in San Francisco, California.

The Camera

1. The camera obscure effect was achieved by using the hole for a lens while projecting light into the dark space.
2.  High quality glass lenses got us one step closer to creating the first modern camera.
3. In 1827, Niepce added film to the camera. This gave us three parts to the first modern camera; film, a glass lens, and a dark box.
4. Our cameras today still use the same concept of the first camera. The light still passes threw the lens and exposes the film to make a photograph.
5. Digital cameras replaced film with a digital sensor called a CCD.
6. In auto mode it's easy to take a good picture every time. This automatically focuses so your only job is to point and press the button. Program mode allows you to control certain things like flash, while still not having to adjust everything yourself.
7. Portrait mode is used to blur the background. It uses the fastest available lens in order to do so.
8. Sports mode is for fast moving scenarios. It freezes motion by using the highest shutter speed possible.
9. You should use the half press button to focus the picture and make sure it looks exactly how you want it before you press the trigger fully.
10. The symbol means disabled flash. When this is on, you will not have flash.
11. The symbol means auto flash. The flash will turn on if the camera thinks the photo needs more light.
12. If you had to much light in a photo, the photo will look washed out.
13. If you don't have enough light, the picture will come out too dark.
14. A stop is used to represent a change in the brightness of light.
15. If there are two suns instead of one, it would be 1 stop brighter.
16. If there are four suns instead of one, it would be 2 stops brighter.
17. A longer shutter speed has more light.
18. A shorter shutter speed has less light.
19. The aperture controls the amount of light that is let in.
20. To increase the amount of light, you must control the aperture so there is a larger opening.

Worst Photos From First Day

These are my worst photos. I don't like the positioning of either person. Also, they are in awkward poses because they aren't interacting with each other or the objects in the area in a natural way. The area is also very dull with nothing interesting to look at.

Best Photos From First Day

The best picture I took in my opinion is the picture of Greyson by the tree. This uses rule of thirds because his head is positioned in the top left corner. I also like how the tables and chairs are framed by the multiple plants in the area.
